San Diego, CA – WomanCare Global is partnering with the International Contraceptive Access (ICA) Foundation to create access to 8,000 long-acting intrauterine contraceptive systems (IUS) in Kenya and South Africa.

WomanCare Global will distribute the 8,000 donated IUS to nearly 300 trained healthcare providers in Kenya and South Africa who are part of the WomanCare Global Maximizing Healthcare Provider Performance™ (MAX) project. MAX focuses on improving women’s reproductive healthcare with an emphasis on post-abortion contraception, particularly long-acting methods.

On behalf of WomanCare Global, our MAX Provider Network and women in the developing world, I would personally like to thank the ICA for making this donation,” said Saundra Pelletier, CEO of WomanCare Global. “We are grateful to be in position to offer the IUS through our MAX program, which will undoubtedly increase the awareness of and access to this safe and proven method of long-acting reversible contraception.”

Physicians and healthcare providers in the WomanCare Global MAX Provider Network are receiving additional clinical training on the appropriate use of the IUS. Once trained, they can begin offering the devices free of charge to women seeking safe and effective contraception.

About The International Contraceptive Access (ICA) Foundation The International Contraceptive Access (ICA) Foundation was established in December 2003 and is collaboration between the Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, a world-wide leading specialty pharmaceutical company, and Population Council, an international nonprofit nongovernmental organization. The objective of the Foundation is to provide local service-delivery organizations with the levonorgestrel releasing intrauterine system (LNG IUS) contraceptive devices on a not-for-profit basis and ultimately serve the reproductive needs of women in resource-poor settings, primarily in developing countries.
