Bellagio Consensus: Recommendations for Action

Posted on: September 20, 2012 by: Amy McNally

On July 9, WomanCare Global came together with the Population Council, the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO), and the Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition (RHSC) to hold a telebriefing on the just-released Bellagio Consensus: Recommendations for Action to Increase Access to Highly Effective, Long-Acting, Reversible Contraception (LARCs).

Saundra played a pivotal role in the telebriefing, presenting important points about availability and access, noting that LARCs are only a solution to family planning needs if they get to the women who need them. “This moment is exciting. We have recommendations from both public and private sectors to position LARCs at the forefront of the family planning conversation.” — Saundra Pelletier, CEO, WomanCare Global.

WomanCare Global strongly endorses the recommendations to:

  • Change policies
  • Reduce cost
  • Integrate LARCs into health systems
  • Ensure availability and access
  • Train and supervise qualified providers
  • Engage support of professional associations
  • Gather and use data to ensure product quality and improved care

Develop a strategic plan to accomplish these goals
